Moltex Energy Supporting next Generation of critical thinkers

On Saturday, June 06, 2020 Moltex Energy is sponsoring the SMR X Hackathon Design Challenge. This event is presented in collaboration with Ontario Tech Univeristy and Inspire Tech, and involves students working in teams to solve complex engineering challenges.

Grades 10, 11 and 12 high school students across Canada are invited to join the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) at Ontario Tech University for the virtual SMR X Hackathon Design Challenge.

“We are thrilled to sponsor this competition,” said Rory O’Sullivan, CEO for North America at Moltex Energy. “These students are our employees of tomorrow and challenges like this, that encourage creative thinking and problem solving are critical.”

This year’s challenge is based on a hypothetical scenario involving the first settlers on Mars. Settlers need energy to power their colony and students will be required to design a nuclear reactor to ensure survival.

This event will help students improve their creative thinking and engineering design skills, establish a new professional network, learn about employment opportunities that support the energy and nuclear sectors, and identify how their ideas could shape and influence a greener, low-carbon-footprint future.

Mr. O’Sullivan added, “Nuclear power is essential to address global energy issues as intermittent renewables alone cannot meet the current and future demand, and I’m confident that these students will be well prepared to work in this industry.”

Registration is free and open to grades 10, 11 and 12 high school students interested in learning more about nuclear energy and small modular reactors (SMRs).

About Moltex:
Moltex Energy is a privately held company striving to solve the world’s most critical challenge, providing safe, clean and affordable energy. The company has headquarters in the United Kingdom and New Brunswick and collaborates with other innovators and nuclear energy experts worldwide. The mission is to cost-effectively produce carbon-free electricity so that fossil fuels can stay in the ground.

Moltex Energy is one of two companies that NB Power has selected to explore building Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in New Brunswick. Moltex has developed a first-of-its-kind technology to build a better nuclear reactor that will safely, cleanly and economically solve global energy issues and power the planet in the 21st century. The workforce, along with the existing nuclear generating station and a supportive government, make New Brunswick an ideal location to build this technology.
