Moltex, ARC and NB Power to engage youth during Nuclear Science Week

Saint John, New Brunswick (Monday, October 17, 2022) – This year, Moltex Energy Canada Inc. (Moltex), ARC Clean Technology (ARC), and NB Power are engaging in discussions with youth about nuclear energy and its benefits as part of Nuclear Science Week.

“The nuclear industry in New Brunswick is growing rapidly,” said Rory O’Sullivan, CEO, Moltex. “There are going to be thousands of jobs supporting it thanks to the SMR innovation currently under development here, and young people have every reason to be excited about the opportunities available for them in an industry that is actively fighting climate change.”

Representatives from all three companies will participate in a live discussion on small modular reactors (SMRs) at Harbour View High School this week. Students will be invited to ask questions to learn more about SMRs and the nuclear industry.

“Young people represent the future of our industry,” said William Labbe, President and CEO, ARC. “Engaging with them now and showing the potential that a nuclear career can offer them will be important as we transition to carbon-free energy.”

In addition, the three companies will participate in The Gaia Project’s Green Expert Panel on nuclear energy, a live webinar on October 19 hosted in collaboration with the New Brunswick Centre of Excellence for Energy to share information on careers with young nuclear trailblazers.

“Through Nuclear Science Week, we are showing young people not only the career opportunities available in New Brunswick in this growing sector, but also how nuclear is helping Canada achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Lori Clark, President and CEO, NB Power.

Nuclear Science Week is an international, broadly observed week-long celebration to focus local, regional, national and international interest on all aspects of nuclear science. Nuclear Science Week takes place each year on the third week of October.

About Moltex:

Moltex is a nuclear technology leader that has caught the attention of governments, utilities and investors worldwide. It is developing three unique technologies: a Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W) that uses recycled nuclear waste as fuel; a WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS) process for recycling nuclear waste to produce SSR-W fuel; and GridReserve thermal energy storage tanks, enabling the SSR-W to act as a peaking plant. Moltex was selected by NB Power to progress development of its reactor technology in New Brunswick, Canada, with the goal of deploying first-of-a-kind SSR-W, WATSS and GridReserve units at the Point Lepreau site.

About ARC:

ARC is a clean energy technology company developing the ARC-100, an advanced small modular reactor (aSMR) offering inherently safe, reliable, and economical carbon free power. ARC has offices in Washington DC and Saint John, New Brunswick. Leveraging proven technology from the 30-year performance of its prototype, the ARC-100’s simple, modular design provides 100 megawatts of electricity that is cost competitive with fossil fuels and provides reliable and abundant energy to complement intermittent renewables. Important additional applications include the decarbonization of heavy industry, the fueling of low-carbon hydrogen projects, and the creation of valuable medical isotopes. The ARC-100 has been selected by New Brunswick Power for implementation on their Point Lepreau site with completion targeted for the late 2020s, which will make it the first grid-scale Generation IV advanced SMR deployed in Canada.

About NB Power:

For over 100 years, NB Power has been a part of the cultural and economic fabric of New Brunswick. The provincial electric utility has one of the most diverse generation fleets in North America, with approximately 80 per cent non-emitting generation. Over 2,600 energy experts provide reliable, safe and sustainable energy for over 400,000 direct and indirect customers every day. Using a customer-centric approach, NB Power is committed to developing sustainable energy for future generations of New Brunswickers. Part of this commitment includes investments in energy efficiency programs, energy solutions, renewable energy sources and smart grid technology.
