Moltex and CNA ensure Ontario government has all the facts about nuclear

Toronto, Ontario (Tuesday, November 29, 2022) Moltex Energy Canada Inc. (Moltex) is joining the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) and others to share information about the nuclear industry and emerging nuclear technologies with the Ontario government during the CNA Queen’s Park Day event today.

“Support for nuclear as a clean energy source is growing. To maintain this support, it is important to keep government officials and other key stakeholders informed on the opportunities and challenges that exist,” said Rory O’Sullivan, CEO, Moltex. “We look forward to explaining to Ontario leaders how our technology can produce large quantities of clean, reliable energy, while reducing the amount of long-lived nuclear waste.”

Moltex’s Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W) is designed to be fueled with recycled spent fuel, enabling a significant reduction in the volume of nuclear waste. Since the 1960s, over 2.5 million fuel bundles have been used to power Canada’s nuclear reactors. Most of these spent fuel bundles are now stored in Ontario in interim storage facilities.

“The advantages of nuclear energy are being increasingly recognized in Ontario, in Canada, and around the world. Ontario needs to build upon its existing nuclear sector, not only for our net zero goals but also to meet the growing demand for power as the province invests more in electric vehicles, residential heat pumps, and the electrification of heavy industry,” said John Gorman, President and CEO, CNA. “Queen’s Park Day is an important opportunity to ensure that political leaders – and by extension, the people of Ontario – have all the facts about Ontario’s nuclear advantage.”

The Queen’s Park Day event returns this year after a three-year hiatus. Attendees will meet with politicians and policymakers to discuss the current state of the nuclear industry and plan for the future.

About Moltex:

Moltex is a nuclear technology leader that has caught the attention of governments, utilities and investors worldwide. It is developing three unique technologies: a Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W) that uses recycled nuclear waste as fuel; a WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS) process for recycling nuclear waste to produce SSR-W fuel; and GridReserve thermal energy storage tanks, enabling the SSR-W to act as a peaking plant. Moltex was selected by NB Power to progress development of its reactor technology in New Brunswick, Canada, with the goal of deploying first-of-a-kind SSR-W, WATSS and GridReserve units at the Point Lepreau site.
